About Laurel Wreath Academy

Laurel Wreath Academy is a nonprofit school dedicated to providing a high-quality, individualized education for children with unique abilities, special needs, and learning differences.

Rooted in a Montessori-based, Classical education-infused approach, we create a nurturing, structured, and engaging learning environment where every child is valued, supported, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.

Our focus on practical life skills, character development, rich literature-based academics, and a strong sense of community ensures that students not only thrive academically but also develop the confidence and independence needed for lifelong success.

Our Unique Approach

We understand that no two children learn in the same way. That’s why our approach is deeply rooted in both the Montessori method—designed to support hands-on, self-directed learning—and classical education, which immerses students in a literature-rich, character-building curriculum. This fusion creates a dynamic, individualized learning experience that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and real-world skills.

A Tradition of Excellence, Rooted in Science

Dr. Maria Montessori began her groundbreaking work with children with special needs in the early 1900s. Through careful observation and scientific study, she developed an educational approach that emphasized hands-on learning, independence, and respect for the child’s natural development. Her methods proved so effective that children once considered “unteachable” began to thrive, often surpassing their neurotypical peers in academic achievements.

Today, modern neuroscience continues to affirm the validity of Montessori’s work. Studies show that Montessori-based education enhances executive functioning, supports neurodiverse learners, and promotes deeper cognitive and emotional engagement. Research from Dr. Steven Hughes, a pediatric neuropsychologist, highlights that Montessori environments strengthen brain development by encouraging choice, movement, and multi-sensory learning. Additionally, studies in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (Lillard, 2017) confirm that Montessori principles align with best practices in special education, providing structured yet adaptable learning pathways for children with diverse needs.

Infusing Montessori education with classical learning principles further enriches our students’ experiences. Classical education provides a strong foundation in language, literature, history, and philosophy—empowering students with the tools to think deeply, articulate ideas clearly, and develop resilience in the face of challenges.

Beyond Academics

Building Character, Community, and Life Skills

At Laurel Wreath Academy, we understand that true education goes beyond textbooks and tests. We focus on practical life skills, character development, and creating a strong sense of community. Our curriculum integrates:

  • Practical Living Skills – Teaching independence in daily activities, social interactions, and emotional regulation.

  • Character-Building – Instilling values such as kindness, perseverance, and responsibility through meaningful discussions, storytelling, and mentorship.

  • Community Engagement – Encouraging students to form meaningful connections with peers, educators, and the world around them.

  • Rich Literature-Based Learning – Immersing students in classic and contemporary literature that nurtures imagination, empathy, and critical thinking.

A Supportive, Warm, and Engaging Environment

We recognize that our students may require additional support to thrive, which is why we welcome collaboration with each child’s behavioral and medical support teams.

Our dedicated and compassionate educators work closely with your child's Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs), Speech and Occupational Therapists, and personal nursing staff to ensure that every student receives the individualized support they need to succeed.

Our classrooms are designed to be safe, sensory-friendly, and engaging—providing a place where children feel secure, valued, and excited to learn.
